The "Question and Answer Feature" makes it easier for other developers in the community determine which of your questions still need answers, and also helps you to track your open questions.
When you [post a new thread] you can flag it as a question by selecting the checkbox under the "subject line" (default). This indicates to the community that the post is a question rather than general information.
The thread is initially "unanswered", and is hence displayed with the "question mark" icon
in the forums view and within the thread. When an answer is provided, the poster can mark the question as answered, at which point it is displayed with the "star" icon
.
For example, a forum view containing both unanswered and answered threads is shown below:

You can track your unanswered (and answered!) questions from your forum profile (which you access by clicking your hyperlinked name in any forum post).
In addition to marking a question as "answered", as developers respond to the question, the originator can flag responses as "Helpful" or "Correct", or not to flag any response at all. This feature underpins the points system, which recognises developers that contribute to the community, and helps users determine which of several responses are more likely to be accurate.
