History
BeihangUniversity(formerly Beijing Institute of Aeronautics) or BUAA for short, was founded on October 25, 1952. Situated in the capital in the center of ZhongguancunSciencePark, next to China' s National Olympic Center, with an area of over 100 hectares, BUAA is China' s first university of aeronautical and astronautical engineering.
As one of the top-ranked research university, BUAA has had more than 40 projects that were ranked first in China, since it was established. Nowadays, it has evolved into a multi-disciplined, research-oriented university of engineering science and technology with an emphasis on aeronautic and astronautic engineering, covering such diverse fields as science, technology, liberal arts, law, economics, management, philosophy, foreign languages and education.
BUAA has actively and intensively developed its international academic exchange programs and cooperation. It has established cooperation with 152 universities and research institutions from 40 countries, including the Canada, UK, France, Germany, Russia, the USA, and 122 scholars of international renown have been invited as honorary or consultant professors to the university. Every year, on average, about 1000 foreign experts and scholars come to BUAA to give lectures, to visit, and to take part in international conferences, and discussions for scientific cooperation; and every year over 600 professors or scholars in BUAA go abroad to give lectures, participate in academic conferences or conduct cooperative scientific research.
Involvement with Symbian
Introduced by NokiaResearchCenter (NRC, Beijing), Lab of Distributed and MobileComputing(LDMC), School of Computer Science and Engineering, Beihang University, started to lean Symbian OS and C++ programming skills at the beginning of 2004. Currently, there are more than 12 graduate students and 2 teachers dedicated to Symbian OS C++ application development and teaching, and have already developed more than ten Symbian applications based on Series 60 and UIQ, such as Video Surveillance, Mobile TV, VoIP, Mahjong Games, Personal Business Card Recognition System, Mobile Office, etc.. Among these applications, Card Recognition System for Smart Phone has been put into Nokia N91 officially. Besides, many of these applications have gone to market, and achieved a great success economically and socially.
In April 15, 2004, the Seminar of Symbian Application Development and Mobile Computing was hold, which was sponsored by NRC (Beijing) and BUAA. The country manager and principal scientist of NRC (Beijing) delivered a lecture respectively and there are more than 300 students and teachers of BUAA attending the seminar.
Consigned by NRC (Beijing), LDMC has held 10 Symbian OS C++ training classes (five days for each class) for more than 10 famous Chinese universities. And Cooperated with CCID, LDMC held 3 Symbian OS C++ programming training classes oriented to society.
An overview of any courses that include Symbian technology
Currently, a Symbian related course is opened in BUAA, whose name is Mobile Computing. This course is oriented to both undergraduate and graduate students, which focuses on mobile computing theory and application development. Both Symbian OS and Symbian C++ programming are introduced in this course, and students are required to master Symbian OS and C++ programming skill.
A new course that is totally about Symbian is scheduled and will be opened soon, whose name is mobile application development.
