The Symbian Developer Network is excited to announce the Nokia Open C Challenge! Your challenge, should you choose to accept, is to develop a mobile application by porting existing code into the Nokia Open C environment (which is built on Symbian P.I.P.S.). Whether you're new to S60 on Symbian OS or already familiar with C++ programming, the Nokia Open C environment lets you easily port existing open source projects to mobile.
Find out moreAt Symbian we are constantly working to help the developer community upgrade and improve their Symbian OS skills by offering new and improved training courses. In particular, we would like to draw your attention to:
MOSH is a user-defined channel for the distribution of mobile content. A uniquely mobile experience, MOSH is designed to provide a seamless sharing experience. Enabling any user, with any phone, to create, upload and share original or favourite content (applications, games, audio, images, video) instantaneously.
As a developer, MOSH provides a platform for you to leverage the reach and reputation of Nokia to distribute your original applications and content to more people, in more places, in real time.
Use it for distributing all types of mobile content. Upload directly from the device and publish to the MOSH community. See who is downloading your stuff and engage with MOSH users from around the world.
Find out moreBen Morris examines the Symbian OS native C++ idioms that developers love to hate. His focus is on Platform Security and Symbian Signed.
Read the paperIn the second half of part three, Roy Ben-Hayun continues to examine which runtime environments are currently available for Symbian OS and what they can do for us.
Read the paperWith the recent spurt in the proliferation of Symbian smartphones, increasing numbers of developers are looking to learn more about Symbian OS. Mark Shackman looks at some of the resources available, for everyone from seasoned developer to university student.
Read the articleOur popular "Essential Symbian OS" booklet Performance Tips has been updated and is available to download.
Download the bookletThe "Using Symbian OS" booklets Data Sharing Tips and P.I.P.S. have now been translated into Japanese.
Download Data Sharing Tips Download P.I.P.S.We've updated the example VNC files to match the latest release of P.I.P.S. There's the latest source, latest .SIS files (signed for S60 and UIQ) and the whitepaper's also been updated.
Find out moreWe are happy to announce that we are now publishing header files allowing developers to make use of the built-in Symbian OS cryptography libraries. These header files are being made available on the Symbian developer website as a package which can be installed over the top of an existing S60 3rd edition or UIQ 3 SDK, and includes APIs for encryption and decryption using symmetric and asymmetric keys, and password-based encryption and decryption. Applications compiled using these APIs will use the cryptography libraries built in to Symbian OS phones and emulators.
Download the filesNokia and Symbian have recently co-launched a new developer certificate tool. The most significant enhancements are the automatic approval of new certificate requests and the availability of additional certificate details through a Web interface. Once an initial certificate is approved, subsequent requests will be automatically granted and made valid for six months. Developers who need either sensitive capabilities (such as digital rights management) or a certificate for more than 100 devices (IMEIs) will still need to go through the manufacturer-approved devcerts channel.
Get the DevCertRequest tool at Symbian SignedMobile Rules! is a competition for mobile applications and business plans co-sponsored by Nokia. Mobile Rules! seeks out entrepreneurs and developers creating new value, new revenue, and new services for the mobile workforce. Prizes include a business contract with Nokia or a partner, one year of free membership to Forum Nokia Launchpad, and a choice of five Nokia devices.
Find out moreThe Forum Nokia Technical Library is a package of small documented items gathered by Forum Nokia Technical Consultancy and Services. The package is offered online (Internet Explorer only) and in two downloadable formats. The Forum Nokia Technical Library is updated regularly and the latest update was published on July 11th.
Find out moreSince the availability of the final UIQ 3.1 SDK on the UIQ Developer Portal a couple of months ago, you've had all the tools needed and enough time to create or port your applications to the Motorola MOTO Z8. As the phone appears in shops in more countries, what you might have been lacking is the opportunity to have the phone in your hands and check that your applications run on it as intended. That's why, until September 30th, you have the possibility to send your applications to UIQ Technology for them to tested, free of charge, on a MOTO Z8, and a test report be sent back to you.
Get your app testedThe Sony Ericsson Developer World Wiki is now editable by all registered Community members - expanded beyond the previous setting of Junior forum members or above - and to celebrate this, Sony Ericsson is launching a competition where the most innovative use of a UIQ 3 API published as a Wiki article will win a new P1 smartphone. The submission deadline is August 27.
Enter and get creativeMeet the UIQ Technology team at the Symbian Smartphone Show this October in London. Whether you want to learn more about UIQ, ask a technical, commercial or partnering question, show us your latest application or meet the persons you've been in touch via the forums and email, the UIQ Technology stand will be the focus point at this annual industry event. On the UIQ Technology, Motorola and Sony Ericsson stands you'll be able to see all the UIQ 3 phones.
